Signs of a water main problem

  • A water bill that jumped with no change in use
  • Low water pressure throughout the building
  • A wet or sunken strip in the yard
  • Water pooling near the foundation or the street
  • The sound of running water when everything is off
  • Discolored water from every faucet
  • A meter that moves when no water is being used
  • Water in the basement near where the line comes in

Why water mains fail

Age, mostly. Old pipe corrodes, joints loosen as the ground settles, and roots and hard freezes finish the job. A small leak underground can run for months and only show up on the water bill.

Repair or replace the line

One break in a sound line is a repair. A line that has leaked in more than one spot usually costs less to replace than to keep patching. We show you what we found and price the options.

New lines and new valves

New construction, an addition, or a switch from a well to public water all need a new line. We replace main shutoff valves too, and we label and date our work so the next person knows what they are looking at.

What our customers say

Water Main Installation and Repair questions

  • Who is responsible for the water main, me or the utility?

In most places the property owner is responsible for the line from the meter or the property line to the building. Check with your water provider, and we can help you work out which side of the line the problem is on.

  • How do I know if the leak is in the main?

Turn off everything that uses water and look at the meter. If it is still moving, water is going somewhere. A wet spot in the yard along the path of the line is another strong sign.

  • Is a broken water main an emergency?

If water is flooding the yard, the basement or the street, yes. Shut off the water at the meter or the main valve if you can and call. Our team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
