What is going on with your plumbing?
Tap what you are seeing. We will tell you the likely cause and what to do right now.
No hot water
Likely cause. Usually the heating element, the gas valve or the pilot, or a tank that has reached the end of its life.
Do this now. Check the breaker for an electric heater or the pilot light on a gas one. If water is pooling under the tank, close the cold valve on top.
Water in the basement
Likely cause. Most often a sump pump that quit, a stuck float switch or a discharge line that is blocked or frozen.
Do this now. Unplug anything electrical near the water and keep people out of it. Call us now.
Pressure keeps going up and down
Likely cause. On a well, this is usually a pressure tank that has lost its air charge, which makes the pump short cycle.
Do this now. Watch the pressure gauge by the tank. If the pump clicks on and off every few seconds, shut it off at the breaker and call.
No water at all
Likely cause. On a well, a failed pump, a tripped breaker or a bad pressure switch. On city water, a break on the line or a shutoff.
Do this now. Check the breaker for the well pump. If it is not tripped, call. No water is an emergency.
A pipe froze or burst
Likely cause. Pipes on outside walls, in crawlspaces and in unheated garages freeze first. Ice splits the pipe.
Do this now. Shut off the main water valve and the water heater, open a faucet on the lowest floor, then call. Never thaw a pipe with a flame.
Water bill jumped
Likely cause. A toilet that runs when no one is looking, or a hidden leak on a supply line or the water main.
Do this now. Turn off every tap and watch the water meter. If it still moves, water is going somewhere. Call and tell us what you saw.
Crust on faucets, spots on dishes
Likely cause. Hard water. The groundwater here runs through limestone and leaves scale on everything it touches.
Do this now. Nothing urgent. A water softener stops it, and it helps your water heater last longer.
Toilet running, faucet dripping
Likely cause. A worn flapper or fill valve in the toilet, a worn cartridge or washer in the faucet.
Do this now. Close the shutoff valve under the fixture if it is getting worse. These are quick repairs.
Sewage backing up
Likely cause. A blockage or a break in the sewer line between the house and the street. Tree roots are a common cause.
Do this now. Stop running water everywhere in the building, washer and dishwasher included, and call us now.
